What is it like working with me?

I take a humanising, non-pathologising approach to therapy. I don’t see distress as something wrong with you that needs to be fixed. Anxiety, self-criticism, emotional overwhelm and patterns that feel stuck can be ways you’ve learned to cope or protect yourself. Together, we can work to understand these responses and build a deeper, more compassionate relationship with yourself.

The first conversation and sessions

A free, 15 minute initial consultation is a chance to talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, what you hope might change and any questions you have. It’s also a chance to get a feel for whether working together feels right for you.

In our first sessions, we’ll take time to understand your experiences, what matters to you and what you’d like support with. You don’t need to arrive with the right words or share everything at once. We can find a pace that feels manageable and build trust as we go.

You’re welcome to ask questions, pause or let me know if something doesn’t feel helpful. We’ll check in together about how the work is going and adjust our approach when needed.

Working with IFS and staying flexible

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is at the heart of my work. It offers a way to understand the different feelings and responses within you, including protective adaptations that may have made sense at one time but now leave you feeling stuck. The work can help you relate to yourself with greater curiosity and self-compassion, rather than judgement.

I also draw on somatic, mindfulness and polyvagal-informed practices where they feel useful. These can support you to notice what’s happening in your body, feel more grounded and develop a greater sense of presence in daily life. I stay flexible and collaborative, we can adapt the approach together, and you can let me know if something doesn’t feel helpful.

Therapy can involve deep and tender work, but it doesn’t have to be serious every second. There’s room for warmth, ordinary conversation and humour when it feels right. We’ll meet what you’re bringing with care, while remembering that you’re a whole person, not a problem to solve.
